Description

Native to Tanzania, Kentrosaurus aethiopicus was a stegosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic, around 155 - 150 million years ago. Its remains have been found at the Tendaguru Formation.

Kentrosaurus measured around 4,5 metres or so in length. The thighbones of this dinosaur come in two distinctive types, suggesting that there was a subtle difference between males and females. Females were generally bigger and had thicker thigh bones, perhaps to support the added weight of the male during mating. Females appear to have been about twice as numerous as the males, suggesting that the males were polygamous.

Like other stegosaurs, Kentrosaurus was a herbivore, and since it was unable to chew, it swallowed plant matter in large chunks. It may have been able to temporarily rear up on its hind legs, to browse at a maximum height of around 3,3 metres off the ground (as opposed to 1,7 metres when on all fours).

The tail of Kentrosaurus was very flexible, capable of covering an entire half circle behind its body. The maximum swinging speed of the tail has been estimated at around 50 km/hour. Armed with seven pairs of bony spikes, a blow from this tail would've been able to seriously injure an opponent. The shoulders were protected by a large bony spike, meaning the only weak spots on the animal's body would've been at the head, and around the hip region.
